Vertical Transmission of Pathogens of Invertebrates

Pathogens of Invertebrates

Part of the book series: Comparative Pathobiology ((CPATH,volume 7))

Abstract

It has long been recognized that many pathogens of invertebrates can be transmitted directly from infected hosts to their immediate progeny. Indeed, this subject has achieved considerable eminence in the literature pertaining to infectious diseases, having been discussed at length by Louis Pasteur (1870) in his classical work on the diseases of silkworms entitled Etudes sur la Maladie des Vers a Soie. In this work, which deserves as much credit as any document to be considered a cornerstone of the germ theory, Pasteur recognized that the transfer of the pebrine agent — the microsporidian now known as Nosema bombycis — in silkworm eggs provided the key to the distribution and to the practical resolution of an important agricultural problem. Table 1 represents a translation of one of Pasteur’s tables showing data on infection rates in samples of silkworm eggs sent to France from Japan. This type of information allowed Pasteur to outline a method for routine sampling of egg batches in order to prevent the introduction of pebrine into silkworm colonies. Since Pasteur’s time many workers have noted that propensity for hereditary transmission of insect pathogens, and this phenomenon has accumulated a sizable literature.
