Abstract
Proteases are a major constituent of intestinal brush border enzymes. The overall functional response of these enzymes in a given intestinal segment probably depends on changes in their apparent kinetic constants and also on the distribution pattern of their activity in the mucosa. This has been suggested by the results obtained after section biochemistry (quantitative histochemistry; Gossrau et al., this volume) analyzing the brush border disaccharidases lactase and α-D-glucosidase in different experimental models of intestinal adaptation (Gutschmidt et al., 1982). Using the same technique the apparent kinetic constants of additional brush border enzymes (alkaline phosphatase; aP; Gutschmidt et al., 1980) and dipeptidylpeptidase IV (DPP IV; Gutschmidt and Gossrau, 1981) have been determined previously at representative sites along the villus (Gutschmidt et al., 1980).
