Abstract
Proteases are involved at various stages in the mechanism of hormone action in the mammal. Proteolytic enzymes are causal to the genesis of physiologically active hormones from prepro- and pro- polypeptides. In a subsequent step, the role of proteases in the action of cyclases, and possibly in the coupling mechanism between hormone receptors and cyclases, too, has been known for some time. More recently, regulatory proteolysis has been implicated in the genesis of receptors for various hormonal steroids.
