The positive-definiteness of the measure may be maintained in two dimensional models by an appropriate rearrangement of the sum over fermionic degrees of freedom. Then a direct Monte Carlo simulation becomes possible. See:J. E. Hirsch, D.J. Scalapino and R.L. Sugar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 47 (1981) 1628.
