Abstract

In Chapter 1 we developed the elementary statistical mechanics of systems of distinguishable particles, and in Chapter 3 we showed how the concepts could be used to determine the thermodynamic functions for such systems, exemplified by the Einstein and Debye models for crystalline solids. In this chapter we consider the same aspects of systems of indistinguishable particles. This is in order to be able eventually to tackle the subject of gases, the molecules of which, because of their translational motion, must be regarded as indistinguishable.
