Disease Resistance in Rice

  • Chapter
Durable Resistance in Crops

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Science Institutes Series ((NSSA,volume 55))

Abstract

Rice in different parts of the world is grown in many different agroecosystems and in different pathosystems. This means that the kinds and levels of resistance needed will differ among locations and thus, among rice improvement programs. Moreover, the rice ecology (dry or wet upland, irrigated, swamp, etc.) influences greatly the epidemiological potential of various common pests and diseases, beyond general climatic differences. The tendency for any new level of resistance to be short or long lasting is also dependent on these different factors, above and beyond the genetic plasticity of the pathogen and the type of resistance added to the host genotype.
