Abstract
Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is an important crop in Denmark. The spring barley area was 0.9 million ha in 1963 increasing to 1.6 million ha in 1980, which is 54 percent of the agricultural area. Within this period of time, spring barley varieties with major genes for resistance to the powdery mildew fungus (Erysiphe graminis DC. ex Merat f.sp. hordei Marchal) have become widely distributed, and the spectrum of varieties has changed continuously. Winter barley is grown on a very limited area, about 6,000 ha in 1980, and is always protected by fungicides.
