Abstract
The navigation of ships through the world’s waters presents a continuing problem of system failure detection and diagnosis. In open, unrestricted waters with little or no traffic, the ship navigation system is fairly tolerant of errors and other failures. As ships approach narrow, restricted channels and increasing traffic densities, the systems failure tolerance decreases.
