Abstract
The highly stratified organization and well documented electro-physiology of the hippocampus (Green, 1964; Pribram and Isaacson, 1975), as well as the availability of techniques for localized measurements with ion-sensitive microelectrodes (Walker, 1971; Oeme et al., 1976), have encouraged recent studies (Benninger et al., 1980; Krnjević et al., 1980) of transmembrane ionic shifts which may be associated with the generation of consciousness and memory formation, and a marked susceptibility to seizure activation and anoxic damage.
