Towed Vehicles and Submersibles

Air-Sea Interaction

Abstract

In studies on air-sea interaction, a knowledge is required of many parameters, relating to both ocean and atmosphere. The discussion in this chapter is limited to some of the system design characteristics of importance in measurement of subsurface parameters leading to determination of the heat budget and vertical heat flux in the upper layers of the ocean, and the exchange of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere. Other air-sea exchanges — water vapour and momentum, for example — are of perhaps equal importance, but the techniques of measurement are different and are beyond the scope of this section.
