Abstract

Since the early sixties, a class of oceanographic observations have been undertaken that required a unique platform. Some of these observations were directed at understanding vertical shear structure; this required an instrument to track the small horizontal speed fluctuation with depth in a known way. Other observations attempted to measure the smallest scales of the heat, salt, and shear structures found in the ocean, and required slow, vibrationless fall rates to accomodate sensitive but slow response probes, or to be free from vibration-induced signals.
