Abstract

Light is a basic factor in life. It acts in either of two fundamental ways :

  1. i)

In photosynthesis, light is the source of energy for the anabolism of photoautotrophic plants and hence most important for the energetics of the whole biosphere.

  2. ii)

Light acts as a signal on autothrophic and heterotrophic organisms, giving information about the environment. For this function, its energy is of minor importance. The best known phenomena are vision in animals and man, photomorphogenesis in plants, and orientation behavior of plants and animals.
