Abstract
The modem, which is a contraction of the words modulator-demodulator, is the device that performs the functions of transmitting and receiving the data signals over the communications channel. Modems are used on analog circuits. Occasionally the literature will refer to “digital modems” as loosely describing either the transmission of digital data over analog circuits or the transmission of digital data over digital communication links. In the latter case, the transmitter-receiver is more descriptively referred to as a channel service unit or digital service unit. In other words, modems are not used on digital systems.
