Metabolic Changes Accompanying Phagocytosis

  • Chapter
Biochemistry and Metabolism

Abstract

A vast knowledge of the biochemical properties of phagocytic cells at rest and during phagocytosis has been gained in the past twenty years. During this period, several excellent reviews have been written on selected aspects of this broad field. The review by Karnovsky (1962) is recommended to those who are interested in the historical development of the biochemical studies on phagocytic cells. Among the more recent reviews, those written by the following authors can be mentioned: Cline (1970), for a survey of the various metabolic pathways of leucocytes, including a chapter on nucleic acid and protein metabolism; Sbarra et al (1977), for the oxidative changes in phagocytizing polymorphonuclear leukocytes and their relationship to microbicidal activity; Elsbach (1977), for a detailed analysis of the lipid metabolism; Klebanoff (1975), and Babior (1978) for the biochemical basis of the microbicidal mechanisms of polymorphonuclear leukocytes; Karnovsky et al. (1975) and Rossi et al. (1975) for the metabolism of resting and phagocytizing mononuclear phagocytes. A treatment of the phagocytic engulfment as a surface phenomenon is found in the book edited by Van Oss et al. (1975). Finally, a coverage of the various features of the phagocytic process is found in a book by Klebanoff and Clark (1978) and, less extensively, in a recent review by De Chatelet (1979).
