Discrimination of Self and Non-self in Plants

Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology

Part of the book series: Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology ((CTI,volume 9))

Abstract

The plant, like the animal, survives and reproduces itself in a potentially hostile environment. Like the animal, it has developed recognition systems that enable it to respond to external challenges and to select appropriate gametes from the variety presented to it. The defense mechanisms that the plant has evolved for coexistence with a spectrum of potential fungal and microbial pathogens appear to involve interaction between an extracellular component of the pathogen and an unknown receptor, presumably on the surface of the host plant. The interaction may initiate the production of a range of plant antibiotics (for review see Albersheim and Anderson-Prouty, 1975; Strobel, 1974; Deverall, 1977; Friend and Threlfall, 1976). This field is currently the subject of much interest and speculation.
