Abstract
The first section of this paper is pedogogical in introducing the reader to the basic physics of gas lasers. The principal objective of the paper is to draw the attention of the atomic and molecular physics community to the cross sections currently being used in models of the CO2 and CO lasers. This is accomplished in Secs. 2 and 3. A subsidiary objective is to present a sketch of the processes involved in the exotic lasers, excimers and mercury monohalides, which have received considerable attention over the last few years.
