Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 119))

Abstract

The inheritence of diabetes mellitus (DM) has for a long time been an insoluble enigma. Some necessary steps forward have been taken, however, by the recognition of probable genetic heterogeneity of DM. One of the main contributions of the HLA investigations in relation to DM has indeed been to provide evidence for such heterogeneity. Another important contribution has been the use of the HLA factors as genetic markers in family and population studies, permitting tests of various genetic models.
