Dietary Fiber and Diabetic Therapy: A Progressive Effect with Time

  • Chapter
Treatment of EARLY DIABETES

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 119))

Abstract

Recent work has shown that fibre supplementation (1,5), especially of high carbohydrate diets (1,2), may reduce post-prandial glycemia (6), urinary glucose loss (3,4), and insulin requirement (1,2,3,4) in diabetics. The mechanism of action is uncertain but may follow slower absorption of nutrient (7) with more gradual postprandial rises in glucose and amino acids. This, in turn would reduce the requirement for insulin to regulate nutrient concentration.
