Abstract
The cultivated almond, Prunus amygdalus Batsch, apparently originated from selections of P. communis Fritsch which occurs in southeastern Russia, Afghanistan and Iran, and its subsequent cultivation in the Mediterranean area pre-dates recorded history. Although introduced into California from Spain via Mexico when the missions were established, these trees died as the missions declined. In 1840, trees were imported from Europe and planted in the New England and mid-Atlantic states but without success as the climate is too severe. In 1843, almond trees were brought from the east coast of the U.S. and planted in California, marking the beginning of present industry (Kester and Asay 1975; Meith et al. 1977).
