Separation of Germinal Centres from Chicken Spleen

  • Chapter
Function and Structure of the Immune System

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 114))

Abstract

The role of germinal centres in immune reactions has intrigued immunologists for almost a hundred years, since Flemming’s classical monograph of 1885 (1), and has been a central theme throughout this Conference series. Such interest derives from the implication of these structures in the following aspects of the immune response:

  1. 1.

Expansion of population of immunocompetent cells (2,3)

  2. 2.

    Generation of B-memory cells (4)

  3. 3.

    Induction of immunological tolerance (5)

  4. 4.

    Long-term retention of antigen (6,7)

  5. 5.

    Multiple antigen retention (8)

  6. 6.

    Antibody production (7)

  7. 7.

Feedback control of antibody production (9, 10)

  8. 8.

    Homing of Bursa-derived cells (11)

  9. 9.

    T-B cell interaction (12)

  10. 10.

    Antigen-B cell interaction (13)
