Abstract

The types of electromotive force (emf) measurements covered in this chapter include galvanic, concentration with and without transport, and glass electrode cells, over wide ranges of temperature and pressure. Measurement of rest potentials and the instantaneous, but continual comparison of working electrode potentials with reference electrodes in potentiostatic work are basically emf measurements but are generally avoided and are obviously dealt with more fully in other papers devoted to electrode kinetics. Emf studies on nonisothermal, Polarographic cells are not discussed for similar reasons. The present chapter attempts to demonstrate, by reference to recently published work, factors important in the measurement of cell emf. Moreover, by devoting various sections to specific quantities, such as pH, K a , K w, γ± , dE/dP, dE/dT E/T, and E/P, the versatility of this type of electrochemical measurement is highlighted. From the aspect of review, this chapter only discusses in detail information published since 1965, although comparisons with earlier work are made occasionally. Because the range of applications of emf measurements is very large and not concerned in general with the continuation of a particular problem, it is difficult to prepare a review without discontinuities. Apologies are also given by the writer for any studies unintentionally overlooked.
