To Dr. Siesjö’s list of possible explanations for the relative susceptibility of brain to sub-total ischemia and for the protection afforded by barbiturates, our own studies (1) in the gerbil suggest that an additional factor, i.e., hypermetabolism of variably damaged tissue, may also play a role.
