Involution of the Thymus Dependent Lymphoid System

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 29))

Abstract

Evidence from clinical and experimental analyses has revealed deficiency of immune function with age in some individuals or animals and not in others (1–6). The immune deficiencies observed during aging are similar to those produced or accelerated by neonatal thymectomy (2–8). Cell mediated immunity deteriorates spontaneously at an earlier age in autoimmune susceptible strains than in autoimmune resistant strains of mice (2,5,8,9). We have suggested that there is a progressive quantitative loss of post-thymic cells during aging (2–4, 7).
