Abstract
Assessment of the development of immune competence by examining the capacity to produce antibody would seem an unreliable index of expression in the immune system, due to the interdependence of many factors and cells in the production of antibody. In an effort to view the first signs of specific immunologic expression, and to thereby gain a more immediate estimate of the pace of the generation of diversity, we have studied the binding of antigen to cells during fetal ontogeny in the chicken, mouse, rabbit and piglet.
