Thymus Extracts Induce Differentiation of Thymus Derived Cells

Abstract

Interaction of thymus and bone marrow derived cells in response to a variety of antigens has been well documented (1–4). However, little is known about the development and differentiation of these cell populations. It has been suggested that both populations stem from the bone marrow cells which can develop either into B-cells directly in the spleen or into T-cells when processed by the thymus (5). The question arises, therefore, what is the nature of thymus processing. The possibility exists that one of the elements responsible for differentiation and maturation of the T-cells is the thymus humoral factor (THF) (6,7). Thymus extracts have been shown to play a significant role in lymphopoiesis (8, 9) and in induction of immunocompetence as reflected by the ability to elicit a graft-vs. -host response (10, 11) and an enhanced response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) measured by hemolysins and plaque forming cells (PFC) (12, 13) or rosette forming cells (14). In the present work we attempted to test whether any of the stages of differentiation of T-cells is affected by THF.
