Fate of Endotoxin in the Circulation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 23))

Abstract

We have been conducting studies to examine the fate of endotoxin in the circulation. For this, we labeled endotoxin with chromium and showed that the endotoxin was present essentially in the whole blood after injection, with very little in the plasma. When we then looked at the formed elements of the blood, we found that the chromium-labeled endotoxin was related to the platelet component of the formed elements, in contradistinction to free chromium which is related to the red cell.
