Lymphoid Cell Migration

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 12))

Abstract

The current interest in lymphoid cell migration is mainly concentrated in four fields:

  1. 1.

Stem cell problems, pioneered by Ford and collaborators (1,2) and evaluated by Stutman and Good in this session (3).

  2. 2.

Central lymphoid organ function; the question of the function of the thymus, of the bursa of Fabricius and of the bone marrow through cell export to peripheral lymphoid organs, and the mapping of the traffic patterns and functions of these cells. These questions have been in the focus in the presentation by Bryant (4), by Chanana et al. (5), by Durkin et al. (6) and by Stutman and Good (3).

  3. 3.

The sequence of events on the cellular level in the immune reaction, from antigenic stimulation to antibody formation or the cellular immune response. The paper by Hall and Smith (7) has dealt with this issue.

  4. 4.

Recirculation of lymphoid cells. This has not been the main subject of any of the sessions’s speakers, although it has been briefly discussed in many of the papers.
