Abstract

In reviewing the art of the reviewer, author Auberon Waugh has recently written that “It is the duty of the reviewer to write dispassionately. Since this is often not possible it is right that from the outset, he should declare his special interest, including any personal prejudice or antipathy”. It seems that the reviewer of practice and progress in a field of scientific enquiry would do well to do likewise. Certainly, one’s own experience in a particular field must inevitably effect his relation with it and colour his judgement concerning the future developments he would like to see.
