Controls of Nucleolar Function in Cancer Cells

  • Chapter
Book cover Morris Hepatomas

Abstract

The protein synthesizing machinery of the cell in which the ribosomes play a key role is of great importance to its rate of growth (1). The availability of ribosomes is dependent upon the activity of the nucleolus (Fig 1), which is the sole site of synthesis of preribosomal RNA and of assembly of preribosomal particles. The high rate of protein synthesis is one reason why the attention of oncologists has been directed to analysis of nucleolar structure and function (2).

These studies were supported by the Cancer Research Center Grant CA-10893 awarded by the National Cancer Institute, DHEW, the Davidson Fund, the Wolff Memorial Foundation and a generous gift from Mrs. Jack Hutchins.
