Substituent Effects in Olefinic Systems

  • Chapter

Abstract

Most of the early work in the field of linear free energy relationships was concerned with benzene derivatives. Interest in saturated organic molecules has recently led to an understanding1–3 of the differing modes of transmission of electronic effects of substituents. By contrast, relatively little attention has been paid to similar effects in simple olefins. Substituent effects on the reactions of the unsaturated linkage in olefins were well discussed by Charton4 as part of a general review on nonaromatic unsaturated systems, but little attention was paid there to physical properties, apart from some tabulated correlations. Recently, theoretical, nuclear magnetic resonance, and infrared studies have each helped towards the attainment of a considerably better understanding of interactions in simple olefins, and it is thus timely to present a more detailed review.
