Abstract

The mortality from the common cancers affecting the population of this country have remained disturbingly constant over recent years. (Table 1) Furthermore, survival rates after ‘curative’ surgery in those patients treated in an apparently early stage leave little room for complacency. (Fig. l) Indeed, the small changes in cancer statistics reported over the last 50 years could equally well be ascribed to changes in population characteristics, changes in the techniques of data collection, or changes in the natural behaviour of the cancers, rather than to any real advances in treatment.
