Inhibition of Cell Protein Degradation by Microtubular Inhibitors

  • Chapter
Intracellular Protein Catabolism II

Abstract

That the degradation of cell protein in eukaryotic cells involves more than simple hydrolysis of peptide bonds is now well-established. Simpson(22), using rat liver slices, first demonstrated an energy requirement for the degradation of cell protein, while later studies with this same system by Steinberg and Vaughan(23) showed that protein synthesis also appeared to be a necessary condition for the degradation of cell proteins. Although most workers(2),(9),(11),(27), using other experimental systems, have corroborated these requirements for energy and protein synthesis in degradation of cell proteins, other studies(1),(8),(20),(26) have suggested that the requirement for protein synthesis appears to be less than absolute.
