Abstract

The position of Tarsius in the evolution of the order Primates has long been controversial. Gadow (1898) put it in a separate suborder, but Pocock (1918) allied it with the monkeys, apes, and man in the group Haplorhini, assigning the lemurs, lorisoids, and tree shrews to the Strepsirhini. This latter classification was later accepted by Hill (1955). On the other hand, Simpson (1945) in his influential classification of mammals divided the Primates into two suborders, Anthropoidea and Prosimii, placing Tarsius in the latter together with lemurs, lorisoids, and tree shrews, although as a separate infraorder.
