Alkali Atom Adsorption on Nickel-Structure and Electronic Excitations

Part of the book series: Battelle Institute Materials Science Colloquia ((BIMSC,volume 30))

Abstract

Adsorption of sodium and potassium on Ni(100) has been investigated by means of low-energy electron diffraction and electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. Lateral adatom distributions and tentative adatom positions are determined. Electronic excitations from occupied valence and core states and a collective excitation among the valence electrons are reported. The excitations are found to be characterized by their dependence on the surface density and charging state of the adatoms. The electron spectroscopic observations, in conjunction with work-function data, have been utilized to explore the adatom valence electron structure and charging.
