Abstract
Although the theory of chemical rate constants, in the form given it by Eyring around 1930, serves rather well in many situations, there is a quite substantial number of reactions in which it seems to fail. The first penetrating examination of its validity, together with an outline of how to proceed when it fails, was given by Kramers1 in 1940, and there has been no really major advance in the theory since. Kramers’ results are summarized as follows.
