Field Ionization at Surfaces Investigated by Mass Spectrometry

  • Chapter
The Physical Basis for Heterogeneous Catalysis

Part of the book series: Battelle Institute Materials Science Colloquia ((BIMSC,volume 30))

Abstract

Experimental results are reported which elucidate details of field-ionization mechanisms at surfaces. On group IB metals, complex ions are formed because of field interaction. Oxygen on silver is not detectable as field ion. The physical adsorption of sulfur and the molecular transformation S2 → … → S8 is not field dependent.
