Abstract

More than ten years of research in any field, during which thousands of scientific papers are written, might be expected to yield many important definitive conclusions. At no time has this been true of psychotherapy, which of all subjects is one of the least amenable to scientific study. The overall result of the period leading up to 1963, when my previous book, A Study of Brief Psychotherapy, was published, had been little other than confusion. What of the period since then?
