Abstract
The purpose of this paper is neither to review the literature on polychaete reproduction nor to describe the diverse reproductive habits and developmental stages that occur among polychaetes. Rather, this is an attempt to summarize the “do’s, don’t’s, and probably’s” pertaining to the successful culture of this fascinating group of marine invertebrates. The Polychaeta, one of the most prevalent components of almost any marine benthic community, has recently been selected by the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States as one of the groups of organisms to be used in bioassays (both adult and developmental stages) of man’s transgressions upon the marine environment. A synopsis of polychaete culture is therefore timely.
