Peripheral Nerve Structure

  • Chapter
The Peripheral Nervous System

Abstract

Recent research dealing with the morphology of peripheral nerves has been concerned largely with their cellular constituents and has emphasized the morphological correlates of functional and metabolic activity. Application of new cytological techniques has expanded morphological horizons rapidly, and current concepts have benefited also from the study of reactions of peripheral nerves to experimental alteration and disease. A complete review of the structure of peripheral nervous tissue is beyond the scope of this chapter. Here, cellular morphology of mammalian nerve is the main concern, and recent research has been favored in selecting references to include herein. Current texts can be used to supplement the introduction to the histology of peripheral nerve that is provided below. Other books and reviews deal with certain aspects of nerve structure in much greater detail and also provide many additional references (Schmitt and Geschwind, 1957; Lehmann, 1959; Causey, 1960; Speidel, 1964; Murray, 1965; Bischoff, 1970; Gray, 1970; Jacobson, 1970; Peters et al., 1970; Billings, 1971).
