Abstract

Current techniques in the measurement and analysis of high resolution neutron cross sections are reviewed. In the energy region in which the resonance structure is resolved, only for fissile target nuclei is the present situation unsatisfactory. This is attributed to insufficient data, particularly with respect to resonance spins. Fission fragment anisotropies are found to be correlated both with fission widths of the resonances and with the fission mass distribution, and such measurements are expected to be fundamental to resonance analysis. In the unresolved resonance region, the fissionable targets still are a major problem because of intermediate structure in fission. While a systematic approach to the problem is still lacking, the use of a runs statistic (following a suggestion by G. D. James) seems to hold promise.
