Coherence Widths in Highly Excited Compound Nuclei

Abstract

The existence of cross section fluctuations in nuclear reactions involving highly excited compound nuclei is now well established {1} since its theoretical prediction {2}. Next to the mean square deviation of the individually fluctuating cross sections from the average cross section, the important quantity desired experimentally is the mean width (FWHM) of the fine structure. This mean width is closely related to the mean level or mean coherence width Γ of the highly excited compound nucleus levels. Besides the fact that there is no other experimental access to this quantity in the region of overlapping levels (continuum region) than via cross section fluctuation measurements, its knowledge together with the mean level spacing D in the continuum is rather fundamental.
