Abstract
The intention of this communication is to shed light on the hallucinogenesis and psychopathology of the acute alcoholic psychoses. It is also our intention to present additional evidence to challenge the simplistic view that the hallucinogenic mechanism in acute alcoholic psychoses is either the organic disturbance reflected in clouding of sensorium or an underlying schizophrenia. This is the main underlying assumption in the widely held concept of a schizophrenic etiology for acute alcoholic hallucinosis (which persists inspite of evidence to the contrary [1-6] and none in support) and a true alcohol withdrawal etiology for delirium tremens. The challenging evidence is the demonstration that while hallucinations and clouding of sensorium are significantly related to each other, they are each independently related to five additional variables examined in this study.
