Abstract
Suppose we wished to investigate the relation between the height of fathers and that of their eldest sons (when grown up). (Of course the reader will have noticed that tall fathers tend to have tall sons; but are the sons shorter or taller on average than their fathers? After all, some tall fathers have short sons and vice versa.) Suppose observations of a large number of heights of father and son have been made and that this data has to be analysed.
