Abstract

The major task of the panel on “The Environmental Spectrum— Tomorrow” is to delineate probable changes in the characteristics of the air pollution control problem in the future on the basis of present knowledge. In this regard, it is well to keep in mind the speculative nature of any projection, and that the degree of uncertainty increases exponentially with the time span. The definition of air pollution given by the Engineers Joint Council is:

Air pollution means the presence in the outdoor atmosphere of one or more contaminants, such as dust, fumes, gas, mist, odor, smoke, or vapor, in quantities, of characteristics, and of duration such as to be injurious to human, plant, or animal life, or to property, or which unreasonably interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life and property.
