Photochromic Compounds with N=N and C=N Chromophores

  • Chapter

Abstract

Like compounds with the C=C chromophore, numerous groups of compounds with the N=N or C=N chromophore are photochromic. Their photochromism is based on \( E\underset{{hv'}}{\overset{{hv}}{\longleftrightarrow}}Z \)-isomerization [1–3] and is light-induced in both directions. The special features of systems incorporating N=N and C=N bonds, as compared with iso-π-electronic systems with the C=C bond, are attributable to the presence of an unshared electron pair on the nitrogen atom.
