Abstract

There have been few observational studies of manufacturing managers at work. The recorded data from those which have been carried out show a richness difficult, if not impossible, to achieve by other methods. The data also show that many previously accepted managerial concepts are now open to question. This paper has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, to urge researchers to make more extensive use of the observational method if it is applicable to their own studies. Secondly, to present some of the author’s own observational data and a few ideas which stem from this data. The paper goes on to show how data collected by observation can be compared with the work of some researchers who have not used this method, to further illuminate managerial activity. References are chosen from the Proceedings of the 2nd. National Conference of Production Research, 1986, with which to make these comparisons.
