Abstract
Majority of vital and basic engineering activities originate in the foundry and forging industries. Because of the very nature of its manufacturing activities, workers in these industries have long been exposed to various occupational and environmental hazards. Eventhough many legislations and codes of practices have been in existence, silica, carbon monoxide, and metal fume are still considered as high priority health hazards in these industries. Equally important are the excessive noise and vibration levels, heat stress, illumination, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation levels. Added to these are the problems related to working postures, individual feeling of fatigue, unfavorable arrangement of work space and poor methodologies/manufacturing processes. The effects of these on theihealth, safety & performance proficiency of the work force and the impact of these on the ecological imbalance in general have been the subject matter for discussion at all levels. A wealth of information in the form of national and international conference proceedings, research reports, press releases, etc exists on various aspects of this issue.
