Abstract
Magnetic resonance took on an entirely new character with the realization that it could be used for medical imaging (1) in a similar way to X-ray tomography. It was not long before it became apparent that NMR methods can have an even more fundamental impact on medicine through the observation of high resolution spectra in vivo. Often these are phosphorus-31 spectra of molecules involved in metabolism, because of the inherent simplicity of such spectra, but proton and carbon-13 high resolution spectroscopy is also feasible, and the latter offers the promise of work with isotopically enriched drugs. Medicine will never be quite the same; nor will NMR spectroscopy, for it is just now experiencing a wide publicity never dreamed of in the early days.
