Regulation of pesticides in Finland

Abstract

There was a steady increase in the use of pesticides from the mid-1940s up until recent years. The amounts of pesticides marketed by manufacturers and importers since 1953 are known precisely. Annual reviews have been published by the product group (e.g., Markkula 1954 and 1972). There have also been reviews covering longer periods (e.g., Markkula and Tiittanen 1969, Mukula and Ruuttunen 1970). Not all the consignments were retailed during the year in which they were marketed and some never reached the consumer so that the marketed amounts are generally somewhat larger than the amounts used; however, the amount of sales does give a fairly good idea of the applied amount.
