Abstract
The year 1960 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the enactment by the Congress of the United States of the Insecticide Act of 1910. This was “An Act for preventing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded Paris greens, lead arsenates, and other insecticides, and also fungicides, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes”. In the intervening years since those days of Paris greens and lead arsenate, many new chemicals have been developed for household, agricultural, and industrial purposes. The intended uses and the claims made on the labels and in advertising for the products formulated from these chemicals determine whether or not they are subject to the provisions of the Federal and state laws which regulate their marketing. It is generally accepted that these laws have played an important role in the rapid and orderly development of the pesticide chemical industry.
